<holidayfyi-glossary slug="mistletoe"></holidayfyi-glossary>A parasitic plant with white berries regarded as sacred in Celtic druid tradition for its associations with fertility, protection, and healing, and adopted into Christmas customs through the practice of hanging a sprig in doorways under which people are expected to kiss. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe developed in 18th-century England and spread throughout the English-speaking world, with possible roots in Norse mythology's association of mistletoe with Baldur and the goddess Frigg.
