Boxing Day in South Africa is officially known as the Day of Goodwill, a public holiday that emphasizes generosity, community, and reconciliation. The renaming reflects the country's post-apartheid commitment to building a more inclusive society, and the day is meant for extending goodwill across communities.

In practice, the Day of Goodwill is spent much like an extension of Christmas. Braais (barbecues) continue, with families cooking up leftover meats and preparing fresh salads. Many South Africans head to the beach, particularly along the coasts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, and the Eastern Cape. Durban's beachfront is famously packed on Boxing Day.

Cricket is a major Boxing Day tradition. The Boxing Day Test match, held at various venues around the country, draws cricket fans for a day of sport in the summer sun. Horse racing meetings are also held at tracks across the country, continuing a colonial-era tradition.

Shopping sales begin on Boxing Day, with malls across South Africa offering post-Christmas discounts.
