Christmas(عيد الميلاد) في إسبانيا

تحية محلية: Feliz Navidad!

Christmas in Spain stretches from December 22 to January 6, making it one of the longest holiday seasons in Europe. It kicks off with the Sorteo de Navidad, the world's largest lottery draw, on December 22. Known as El Gordo, it brings entire neighborhoods together as groups who bought shared tickets celebrate or commiserate on live television.

Nochebuena, or Christmas Eve, is the main celebration. Extended families gather for a lavish dinner featuring roast lamb or suckling pig, seafood such as prawns and lobster, and turron (nougat) for dessert. In Catalonia, children beat the Caga Tio, a small hollow log, with sticks while singing songs to make it produce small gifts and sweets.

Unlike many Western countries, the primary gift-giving occasion in Spain is January 6, Dia de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day). On the evening of January 5, elaborate Cabalgata de Reyes parades wind through city streets as the Three Kings throw candy to crowds. Children leave their shoes out to be filled with presents overnight. The next morning, families eat Roscon de Reyes, a ring-shaped cake with a hidden figurine and bean inside.

Throughout the season, nativity scenes called belenes are displayed in homes, churches, and public squares. Living nativity reenactments, or belenes vivientes, are popular in smaller towns. On New Year's Eve, Spaniards follow the tradition of eating twelve grapes at midnight, one for each stroke of the clock.
