Día de los Muertos(يوم الموتى) في بيرو

Peru's Day of the Dead celebrations on November 1 and 2 weave together Catholic All Saints' traditions with ancient Andean beliefs about death and the afterlife. In Quechua-speaking communities, the holiday connects to the Aya Marcay Quilla, the month of carrying the dead, when Inca tradition held that the spirits of the deceased returned to visit the living.

Peruvian families visit cemeteries bearing offerings of food, flowers, and drink for their departed relatives. Traditional offerings include tanta wawas, sweet bread figures shaped like babies or people, decorated with colorful icing. Families also bring the deceased's favorite meals, drinks, and coca leaves. The largest and most colorful cemetery celebrations take place in the highlands, particularly in Cusco and the surrounding Sacred Valley towns.

In Lima's massive Presbitero Maestro cemetery, Peru's most historic burial ground, the Day of the Dead draws thousands of visitors. Families set up elaborate floral arrangements and spend hours at gravesides, sharing meals and memories. Live musicians, including bands playing huayno and cumbia, circulate among the graves, hired by families to serenade their departed loved ones with their favorite songs.

Andean communities maintain particularly vivid traditions. In some villages, skulls of ancestors are decorated and paraded through town. In others, families set out a banquet for the returning spirits, leaving doors and windows open to welcome them. The syncretism of Indigenous and Catholic beliefs creates a celebration that is uniquely Peruvian, neither purely a solemn religious observance nor a festive party, but a tender and deeply human communion between the living and the dead.
