中秋节 (Zhōngqiū Jié)(مهرجان منتصف الخريف) في ماليزيا

تحية محلية: Zhongqiu kuaile

The Mid-Autumn Festival, known locally as Pesta Tanglung or the Lantern Festival, is celebrated primarily by Malaysia's Chinese community, which makes up about a quarter of the population. The festival is a vibrant expression of Chinese-Malaysian cultural identity, celebrated with enthusiasm in Chinese-majority areas of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, Malacca, and Johor Bahru.

Mooncakes from Malaysian Chinese bakeries blend traditional recipes with local flavors. Durian mooncakes are enormously popular, reflecting Malaysians' passion for the pungent fruit. Other local innovations include pandan-flavored mooncakes, gula melaka (palm sugar) variations, and nyonya-style mooncakes influenced by Peranakan cuisine. Traditional lotus paste and red bean varieties remain staples, and the gifting of mooncake boxes is an important social and business custom.

Lantern processions are the most visible celebration, with children and families carrying colorful lanterns through streets and parks. The traditional paper lanterns in shapes of fish, rabbits, and butterflies have been joined by modern LED and battery-powered versions, though many families still prefer the romantic glow of candlelit lanterns. Shopping malls in Chinese-majority areas create elaborate Mid-Autumn decorations and host cultural events.

Community temples and Chinese clan associations organize celebrations that include cultural performances, lantern-making competitions, mooncake-eating contests, and lion dances. The festival also provides a bridge between cultures, as Malaysian friends of all ethnicities are often invited to share mooncakes and join in festivities. Pomelos and other seasonal fruits are displayed and shared, and the festival evening culminates in family dinners and moon-watching gatherings.
