Songkran, the Thai New Year, is celebrated from April 13 to 15 and is famous worldwide for its massive water fights. The festival marks the beginning of the traditional Thai lunisolar calendar and coincides with the hottest time of the year, making the water-throwing traditions a welcome relief from temperatures that regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius. The festival was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023.

The water traditions have both sacred and playful dimensions. The gentle pouring of scented water over Buddha images and the hands of elders as a sign of respect and blessing is the traditional core of the festival. This has evolved into the world's largest water fight, with Silom Road and Khao San Road in Bangkok becoming epicenters of aquatic mayhem where millions of locals and tourists armed with water guns, hoses, and buckets drench everyone in sight.

Beyond the water fights, Songkran is deeply spiritual. Thai families visit temples to make merit, offer food to monks, and bathe Buddha images in fragrant water containing flower petals and Thai herbs. Sand stupas are built in temple grounds, symbolizing the return of sand inadvertently carried away from the temple on one's feet throughout the year. Elders receive the rod nam dam hua ritual, where younger family members pour water over their hands as a gesture of respect.

Songkran is also a major family reunion period, similar to Chinese New Year, with millions of Thais traveling from Bangkok to their home provinces. The exodus creates one of the world's largest annual migrations, and road safety campaigns are heavily promoted due to the spike in traffic accidents. Traditional Songkran foods include khao chae, rice soaked in jasmine-scented water served with intricate side dishes, a royal Thai dish that perfectly suits the hot season.
