<holidayfyi-glossary slug="solstice"></holidayfyi-glossary>An astronomical event occurring twice yearly when the Sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon. The summer solstice (around June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere) is the longest day, while the winter solstice (around December 21) is the shortest. Many ancient and modern holidays, including Midsummer and Yule, are tied to solstices.
