<holidayfyi-glossary slug="torii-gate"></holidayfyi-glossary>A traditional Japanese gateway marking the transition from the mundane world to the sacred space of a Shinto shrine, characteristically consisting of two upright pillars supporting a curved crossbeam, typically painted vermillion and black. During matsuri (Shinto festivals), torii gates are decorated with shimenawa (sacred rope) and shide (zigzag paper streamers) to mark the period's heightened sanctity, and the thousands of torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto have become one of Japan's most iconic images of festival culture.
