Carnaval(Karneval) in 🇨🇴 Kolumbien

The Carnival of Barranquilla is Colombia's largest celebration and one of the most important cultural events in Latin America. Recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the four-day festival showcases the extraordinary diversity of Colombian culture, blending Indigenous, African, and European traditions in a vibrant explosion of music, dance, and costume.

The Batalla de Flores, or Battle of Flowers, opens the Carnival with a massive parade along the Via 40 highway. Elaborate floats decorated with millions of flowers carry the Carnival Queen and other dignitaries, accompanied by comparsas, dance groups performing cumbia, mapalé, son de negro, and other traditional dances. The Gran Parada de Tradicion on the second day features traditional folk groups, while the Gran Parada de Fantasia on the third day showcases contemporary creativity.

Music is the soul of Barranquilla's Carnival. Cumbia, the iconic Colombian rhythm born from the fusion of Indigenous, African, and Spanish musical traditions, provides the primary soundtrack. But vallenato, salsa, champeta, and other genres also fill the air. The Festival de Orquestas, a competition among orchestras and musical groups, is a highlight for music lovers. The streets throb with sound from morning until the early hours.

The Carnival culminates on Shrove Tuesday with the symbolic death and burial of Joselito Carnaval, a character representing the spirit of the festival. Joselito is mourned in an elaborate mock funeral procession, with weeping women and dramatic performances that bring the celebration to a theatrical close. This tradition encapsulates the Colombian ability to find joy even in the face of endings, and ensures that the spirit of Carnival will be reborn the following year.

Pre-Lenten festival celebrated with parades, masquerades, music, and dancing in the days before Ash Wednesday, most famously in Rio de Janeiro, Venice, and New Orleans.
