Christmas(Weihnachten) in Dänemark

Lokaler Gruß: Glaedelig Jul!

Danish Christmas, or Jul, is characterized by hygge, the uniquely Danish concept of cozy togetherness. The season builds through December with Advent candles, Christmas lunches called julefrokost, and an abundance of traditional baking. The julefrokost, held with friends and colleagues throughout December, features multiple courses of herring, leverpostej (liver pate), flaeskesteg (roast pork), and generous amounts of snaps and beer.

Christmas Eve, Juleaften, is the heart of the celebration. Families sit down to a dinner of roast duck or goose with red cabbage and caramelized potatoes (brunede kartofler). The dessert is ris a l'amande, a cold rice pudding with whipped cream and chopped almonds, topped with warm cherry sauce. A whole almond is hidden inside, and the finder receives the mandelgave, an almond gift, usually a marzipan pig.

After dinner, families join hands and walk around the Christmas tree singing carols. The tree is traditionally decorated with real candles, paper hearts (julehjerter, a design attributed to Hans Christian Andersen), Danish flags, and straw ornaments. Gifts are then opened.

Nisser (Christmas elves) are a central part of Danish Christmas folklore. These mischievous creatures must be appeased with a bowl of risengrod (rice porridge) left in the attic or they will play tricks on the household.
