عيد الفطر(Eid al-Fitr) in 🇧🇩 Bangladesch

Eid al-Fitr in Bangladesh, locally known as Eid ul-Fitr or simply Eid, is the most joyous occasion in the Bangladeshi calendar. The celebration begins with the largest mass gathering of Muslims outside of Hajj at the Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj, where hundreds of thousands pray in an open field. Across the country, eidgahs and mosques overflow with worshippers.

In the days before Eid, Bangladeshis undertake a massive migration from Dhaka and other cities back to their ancestral villages. The exodus, which reduces Dhaka's population by nearly half, creates scenes of extraordinary congestion on roads, railways, and river ferries. Train rooftops are packed with passengers, and launches on the Padma and Meghna rivers carry far beyond capacity.

The Eid feast features semai, sweet vermicelli in condensed milk with raisins and cardamom, which is the signature dish. Biriyani, korma, rezala, and an array of kebabs fill the table. Sweets like mishti doi, roshogolla, and shandesh are exchanged between families. Children don new clothes and collect salami, monetary gifts, from relatives.

In Dhaka's Old Town, the historic Lalbagh area comes alive with celebrations, and families crowd the parks along the Buriganga River. The tradition of embracing three times after Eid prayer, known as kolakooli, is a deeply emotional moment of reconciliation and renewal.
