The Maccabean revolt, the miracle of oil, and how a minor feast became a major holiday

Introduction

[[hanukkah]] — the Jewish Festival of Lights — is observed for eight nights, beginning on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar (falling in November or December). It commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem following a successful Jewish revolt against Seleucid Greek rule in 164 BCE. Yet paradoxically, Hanukkah is among the minor holidays in traditional Jewish religious law — far less theologically significant than Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or [[passover]] — yet it has become the most widely recognised Jewish holiday in the Western world, largely due to its proximity to Christmas and its adoption as a symbol of Jewish identity in a pluralistic society.

Historical Background: The Hellenistic Crisis

Alexander's Conquests and Greek Cultural Dominance

When Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire in 334–323 BCE, he brought Judea under Greek rule. His successors — the Ptolemies (Egypt) and the Seleucids (Syria) — competed for control of the region. Greek culture (Hellenism) spread rapidly through the eastern Mediterranean, and Jewish society was divided between those who embraced Hellenistic culture and those who resisted it as a threat to Jewish law and identity.

Antiochus IV Epiphanes

The crisis came under the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who ruled from 175 to 164 BCE. Seeking to consolidate his empire and generate funds for his Egyptian campaigns, Antiochus plundered the Jerusalem Temple in 168 BCE, removing its sacred vessels. He then issued decrees outlawing Jewish religious practice: Sabbath observance, circumcision, and possession of Torah scrolls were made capital offences. He renamed the Temple to Zeus Olympios and required Jews to participate in pagan sacrifices — including, according to the Books of Maccabees, the sacrifice of pigs on the Temple altar, an act of deliberate desecration.

The Maccabean Revolt

Resistance began in the village of Modi'in with a priest named Mattathias of the Hasmonean family, who killed a Jew about to offer a pagan sacrifice and fled with his five sons to the Judean hills. After Mattathias died in 166 BCE, leadership passed to his son Judah, nicknamed 'the Maccabee' (from the Hebrew makevet, 'hammer'). The Maccabees conducted a guerrilla campaign against the numerically superior Seleucid forces over three years. Their military success, recorded in the Books of Maccabees (preserved in the Apocrypha, not in the Hebrew Bible canon), culminated in the recapture of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount in 164 BCE — exactly three years after Antiochus' desecration.

The Temple Rededication and the Miracle of Oil

The recaptured Temple was ritually cleansed and the altar rebuilt. The rededication (hanukkah in Hebrew means 'dedication' or 'consecration') involved relighting the menorah — the seven-branched lampstand that was meant to burn continuously in the Temple. According to the Talmud (tractate Shabbat, written several centuries after the events), the Maccabees found only enough ritually pure olive oil to burn for one day, yet the oil miraculously burned for eight days — long enough to press and consecrate new oil. The historical Books of Maccabees make no mention of this miracle, focusing instead on the military victory. The miracle story entered Jewish tradition through the Talmud and became the theological centrepiece of the holiday, transforming it from a commemoration of military triumph into a celebration of divine intervention.

The Hanukkiah: Eight Lights Plus One

The hanukkiah (Hanukkah menorah) has nine branches: eight for the eight nights of the miracle, and one for the shamash (servant candle) used to light the others. One candle is lit on the first night, two on the second, and so on, with the shamash lit each night. The lighting is accompanied by blessings and the singing of Maoz Tzur (Rock of Ages). Jewish law requires that the hanukkiah be placed where it is visible to passers-by (publicising the miracle), leading to the tradition of placing it in windows and the increasingly common practice of lighting public hanukkiot in town squares.

Hanukkah in America: From Minor Holiday to Cultural Icon

In traditional Ashkenazi practice, Hanukkah was a minor folk holiday with modest observance. Its transformation into the highly visible 'Jewish Christmas' of American popular culture occurred gradually in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Jewish immigrants to the United States found December a culturally charged month; Hanukkah's proximity to Christmas made it a natural vehicle for Jewish families to participate in the festive season while maintaining distinct religious identity. Gift-giving, minimal in traditional Hanukkah practice, expanded significantly — particularly the practice of giving gelt (money, and later chocolate coins) to children, which became associated with presents matching the scale of Christmas gifts. The White House has hosted Hanukkah receptions since 2001.

Conclusion

Hanukkah is unusual among major holidays in that its current global prominence reflects not ancient significance but modern identity politics. The holiday's core message — the survival of a minority culture against assimilationist pressure, the right to practice one's religion freely — resonates as powerfully in the 21st century as it did when Judah Maccabee lit the Temple menorah 2,200 years ago.
