Brazilian Carnival is the world's largest and most famous celebration, a four-day extravaganza of music, dance, and spectacle held before Lent, typically in February or March. The festival transforms the entire country, with Rio de Janeiro's Sambadrome parade being the most iconic event. Samba schools, community-based organizations from Rio's neighborhoods, spend the entire year preparing elaborate floats, costumes, and choreography for their competitive parade performances.

The Sambadrome competition is a fiercely contested event where twelve top-tier samba schools parade before judges who evaluate their drumming, singing, dance, costumes, floats, and narrative theme. Each school consists of 3,000 to 5,000 members, and the financial investment can reach millions of dollars. The winning school earns enormous prestige for its community. The energy of the bateria, the percussion section of up to 300 drummers, is overwhelming and unforgettable.

Beyond the Sambadrome, blocos de rua or street parties are the heart of Carnival for most Brazilians. Hundreds of blocos parade through city streets, each with its own musical style and theme. In Rio alone, over 500 registered blocos attract millions of revelers. Salvador da Bahia hosts the world's largest street party, with trio eletricos, trucks carrying massive sound systems and live bands, leading parades of hundreds of thousands of dancers through the streets.

Carnival in the northeastern cities of Salvador, Recife, and Olinda has a distinctly different character from Rio's samba-focused celebrations. Salvador's Carnival features axe music and Afro-Brazilian cultural expression. Recife and Olinda celebrate with frevo, a frenetic musical style accompanied by acrobatic dancing with small umbrellas. Each region brings its own musical traditions, costumes, and cultural identity to the festival, making Brazilian Carnival a remarkably diverse national celebration.
