Christmas(Navidad) en Argentina

Saludo local: Feliz Navidad!

Christmas in Argentina arrives during the warmth of summer and is celebrated with the exuberance that characterizes Argentine culture. Extended families, often very large, gather on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) for an outdoor asado (barbecue) that can include beef, chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), and chicken, all cooked slowly over wood coals.

Alongside the asado, the Christmas table features vitel tone (cold veal in tuna sauce, a dish inherited from Italian immigrants), ensalada rusa (Russian salad), matambre arrollado (stuffed flank steak), and pan dulce (sweet bread with dried fruits, similar to panettone). Clerico, a fruity punch made with white wine and seasonal fruits, and sidra (sparkling cider) are the traditional drinks.

At midnight, the celebration erupts. Fireworks fill the sky in every neighborhood, and families exchange gifts and embrace. It is traditional for everyone to go outside at midnight to watch the fireworks and greet neighbors. Globos, or paper hot-air balloons lit by candles, were once released into the sky at midnight, though environmental concerns have reduced this practice.

Many Argentine families attend Misa de Gallo (Midnight Mass) either before or after the feast. Christmas Day itself is quieter, often spent recovering from the late night and visiting family members. Pesebre (nativity scene) displays are common in homes and churches throughout the country.
