Christmas in Brazil, or Natal, falls during the height of summer and is celebrated with a blend of Portuguese Catholic traditions, tropical flair, and modern influences. As the country with the largest Catholic population in the world, Natal is one of the most important holidays on the calendar.

The main celebration is the Ceia de Natal (Christmas supper) on December 24. Families serve peru (turkey) or chester (a plump chicken), tender loin, farofa (toasted cassava flour), arroz (rice), and salpicao (chicken salad with raisins and apples). Dried fruits, nuts, rabanada (Brazilian French toast soaked in condensed milk and cinnamon), and panettone (adopted from Italian immigrants) complete the spread. Champagne and sidra (sparkling cider) accompany midnight toasts.

Many Brazilian cities put up elaborate Christmas decorations. The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas floating Christmas tree in Rio de Janeiro was once the world's largest and became an iconic holiday symbol. Natal, the city in northeastern Brazil literally named Christmas, hosts one of the country's biggest celebrations.

Papai Noel brings gifts at midnight on Christmas Eve. In a tropical twist, he is sometimes depicted arriving by helicopter or jet ski rather than a sleigh. Amigo Secreto (Secret Santa) gift exchanges are enormously popular in workplaces and friend groups throughout December. Fireworks at midnight on Christmas Eve light up cities across the country.
