Christmas(Navidad) en Finlandia
Saludo local: Hyvaa Joulua!
Finland holds a special place in the global Christmas imagination as the official home of Santa Claus, or Joulupukki, who resides in Korvatunturi in Finnish Lapland. The Santa Claus Village near Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and children worldwide send letters addressed to Santa in Finland.
The name Joulupukki literally means Christmas Goat, harking back to ancient pagan Yule traditions. On Christmas Eve, Jouluaatto, Joulupukki himself knocks on the door and asks the famous question: 'Onko taalla kiltteja lapsia?' (Are there any well-behaved children here?) before distributing gifts in person.
The Christmas Eve meal is the focal point. Families serve joulukinku (Christmas ham) baked for hours and glazed with mustard and breadcrumbs, along with various casseroles: lanttulaatikko (rutabaga casserole), porkkanalaatikko (carrot casserole), and imelletty perunalaatikko (sweetened potato casserole). Rosolli, a beetroot salad with cream dressing, adds a vibrant pink splash to the table. Gravlax and pickled herring also appear.
A uniquely Finnish tradition is visiting the sauna on Christmas Eve. Families take a long, peaceful sauna session before the evening meal, sometimes visiting the graves of deceased relatives at the cemetery, where candles create a moving sea of light in the snow.
