Christmas(Navidad) en Francia

Saludo local: Joyeux Noel !

Christmas in France, known as Noel, is celebrated with refined elegance and deep culinary tradition. The French approach the holiday as an occasion for gathering family around an extraordinary meal, and preparations for the Reveillon, the grand Christmas Eve supper, begin days in advance.

The Reveillon is a multi-course affair that may include foie gras, oysters on the half shell, smoked salmon, escargot, and roast capon or turkey stuffed with chestnuts. The crowning dessert is the Buche de Noel, a yule log cake made of sponge and buttercream, decorated to look like a bark-covered log. Champagne flows throughout the evening.

In Provence, the Thirteen Desserts tradition honors the twelve apostles and Christ. The spread includes dried figs, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, dates, nougat, calissons, fougasse, and fresh fruit. This tradition is taken seriously in southern France and each item carries symbolic meaning.

French homes are decorated with a creche, or nativity scene, which is often elaborate and features hand-painted clay figurines called santons, particularly popular in Provence. Children place their shoes by the fireplace for Pere Noel to fill with gifts. Christmas markets in Strasbourg, one of the oldest in Europe, attract visitors from across the continent with vin chaud (mulled wine) and bredele (Alsatian cookies).
