Christmas in Ireland blends deep Catholic tradition with warm hospitality and a strong sense of community. The season begins early, with the Late Late Toy Show, a beloved television event in late November where children review the year's toys, effectively marking the start of the Irish Christmas season. It is the most-watched broadcast of the year.

On Christmas Eve, many families attend Midnight Mass, and a candle is placed in the window to symbolize welcome for Mary and Joseph and as a signal that the household is Catholic. The tradition of the Christmas swim, where hardy souls plunge into frigid Irish seas on Christmas Day morning, has grown increasingly popular, with the Forty Foot in Dublin being the most famous location.

The Christmas dinner features roast turkey with ham, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and gravy. Christmas pudding, soaked in brandy and set aflame, is the traditional dessert, served with brandy butter or cream. Many families also enjoy a box of Afternoon Tea biscuits from Jacob's and a tin of Cadbury Roses or Quality Street.

The twelve days of Christmas are taken seriously in Ireland, and decorations stay up until Nollaig na mBan (Women's Christmas) on January 6, when women traditionally rest while men take over household duties. Saint Stephen's Day on December 26 is marked by the tradition of the Wren Boys, who dress in straw costumes and go door to door singing and collecting money for charity.
