The Netherlands has a unique Christmas dynamic because of Sinterklaas, celebrated on December 5. Sinterklaas is the primary gift-giving event for children, so Christmas itself takes on a more subdued, family-centered character focused on togetherness and festive meals rather than presents.

Christmas in the Netherlands spans two days: Eerste Kerstdag (First Christmas Day) and Tweede Kerstdag (Second Christmas Day) on December 26. The first day is typically spent with immediate family, while the second day involves visiting extended family or friends. Many Dutch families prepare an elaborate Kerstdiner featuring gourmet dishes, often served as a gourmetten, where everyone cooks small portions on a tabletop grill.

Traditional Christmas foods include rollade (rolled meat), hachee (beef stew), and kerstkransjes (wreath-shaped butter cookies). Kerststol, a fruit bread similar to German Stollen, is enjoyed throughout the season. Dutch supermarkets and bakeries stock oliebollen and appelbeignets, though these are more associated with New Year.

Dutch homes are decorated with Christmas trees and lights, and many families attend Kerstnachtdienst (Christmas Eve church service). Ice skating on frozen canals, when the weather permits, adds a distinctly Dutch flavor to the holidays.
