Christmas(Navidad) en Corea del Sur
Saludo local: 메리 크리스마스!
South Korea is one of the few East Asian countries where Christmas is an official public holiday, reflecting the significant Christian population of roughly thirty percent. However, Korean Christmas has developed its own distinct character that blends Western traditions with Korean culture.
Rather than a family-centered holiday, Christmas in Korea has taken on the character of a romantic occasion, similar to Valentine's Day. Couples exchange gifts, dine at upscale restaurants, and stroll through illuminated streets. Myeongdong in Seoul becomes a dazzling wonderland of lights and decorations, and luxury hotels and department stores create elaborate Christmas displays.
Korean Christmas cake is a must-have. Unlike the dense Western fruitcake, Korean Christmas cakes are light, fresh cream sponge cakes decorated with strawberries. Bakeries like Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours sell millions of these cakes in December. Fried chicken is another unexpected Korean Christmas tradition, with KFC and local chains doing some of their best business of the year on Christmas Eve.
For Christian Koreans, Christmas Eve services at churches are important, and many megachurches in Seoul host elaborate productions with choirs and orchestras. Families who celebrate at home enjoy a mix of Korean and Western food, and children receive gifts from Santa Haraboji (Grandfather Santa). Non-Christians often treat the day as a general holiday for shopping, movies, and socializing.
