Christmas(Navidad) en Suiza
Saludo local: Frohi Wienachte! / Joyeux Noel ! / Buon Natale!
Christmas in Switzerland reflects the country's multilingual character. In German-speaking regions, the Christkind brings gifts on Christmas Eve. In French-speaking Romandy, Pere Noel visits, while in Italian-speaking Ticino, Babbo Natale is the bearer of presents. This diversity gives Swiss Christmas a rich, varied character.
The holiday season is ushered in by Samichlaus (Saint Nicholas) on December 6, who arrives accompanied by Schmutzli, his dark-robed companion. Swiss Christmas markets in Zurich, Basel, and Montreux are known for their charm and quality, offering Raclette, fondue, Gluhwein, and handcrafted goods.
Christmas Eve is the main celebration in most Swiss households. The meal varies by region: fondue chinoise (meat fondue) is popular in many families, while others serve Zurich-style veal or a French-influenced multi-course meal. Swiss Christmas cookies, including Brunsli (chocolate-almond cookies), Mailanderli (butter cookies), Zimtsterne (cinnamon stars), and Chrabeli (anise cookies), are baked in enormous quantities and exchanged between families.
On Christmas Day, many Swiss families take walks in the snow-covered mountains or enjoy the festive atmosphere in their villages. The Singing Christmas Tree in Zurich, a pyramid of choir singers performing carols, is a uniquely Swiss spectacle that draws crowds throughout December.
