Easter, or Pascoa, is one of the most beloved holidays in Brazil, second only to Carnival in cultural significance. The celebration is deeply tied to the country's Catholic heritage but has also embraced enthusiastic secular traditions. Brazilians exchange large, elaborately decorated chocolate eggs, called ovos de Pascoa, which are displayed in towering stacks in supermarkets and shops for weeks before the holiday.

The Brazilian chocolate Easter egg is an art form unto itself, often hollow and filled with candies, brigadeiros, or small toys. Premium versions from artisanal chocolatiers can cost hundreds of reais and feature exotic flavors like acai, passion fruit, and churros. Families spend significant portions of their income on these eggs, and children may receive several.

Good Friday is a solemn holiday when Brazilians traditionally eat fish rather than meat. Bacalhau, salt cod imported from Portugal, is the centerpiece of the Good Friday meal, prepared as bolinhos de bacalhau or bacalhoada. In the northeastern city of Ouro Preto, the streets are covered in elaborate carpets made from colored sawdust, flowers, and sand for the Corpus Christi and Easter processions.

The Passion of Christ reenactment in Nova Jerusalem, Pernambuco, is the world's largest open-air theater, performed in a stone city built specifically for the purpose. Over 500 actors perform to audiences of thousands over Holy Week.
