Eid al-Fitr in Nigeria, known as Eid el-Fitr or Sallah, is a major celebration for the country's large Muslim population, concentrated primarily in the northern states but observed nationwide. The celebration begins with the Eid prayer in open grounds and mosques, with the Emir's procession in cities like Kano, Katsina, and Zaria being the most spectacular event.

The Durbar festival, held during Eid in Kano and other northern cities, is a breathtaking display of Hausa-Fulani equestrian culture. Thousands of horsemen in elaborate robes and turbans, accompanied by musicians playing kakaki trumpets and drums, parade before the Emir in a tradition dating back centuries. The Emir himself rides under a large ceremonial umbrella, surrounded by his royal guard.

Nigerian Eid food varies by region and ethnicity. In the north, tuwo shinkafa, a rice-based dough served with miyan kuka, baobab leaf soup, or miyan taushe, pumpkin soup, is common. Kilishi, dried spiced meat, and fura da nono, a millet and fermented milk drink, are popular treats. Suya, grilled spiced meat skewers, is sold at street stalls everywhere.

Children receive new clothes and money, and families visit each other throughout the day. The celebration bridges ethnic and religious divides, with many Christians visiting their Muslim neighbors to share in the festivities, reflecting Nigeria's complex but resilient social fabric.
