In Mexico, Halloween exists alongside and sometimes blends with the much more significant Dia de los Muertos celebrations. October 31 is recognized as Halloween due to American cultural influence, particularly in northern border cities like Tijuana, Monterrey, and Ciudad Juarez, where proximity to the United States has made trick-or-treating and costume parties common.

Mexican children participate in a tradition called Calaverita, going door-to-door asking for candy or small gifts, similar to trick-or-treating but with its own distinct character. Rather than saying trick or treat, children may ask for their calaverita, a small skull-shaped candy. This tradition bridges Halloween and Day of the Dead customs, reflecting the syncretic nature of Mexican celebrations.

Urban areas, particularly Mexico City, have seen a significant increase in American-style Halloween celebrations, with costume parties, haunted houses, and themed events at clubs and bars. Shopping malls and entertainment venues decorate for Halloween and host events for families. Horror-themed attractions like Six Flags Mexico's Festival del Terror have become annual traditions.

The relationship between Halloween and Dia de los Muertos has sparked cultural discussions in Mexico about commercialization and foreign influence versus traditional values. Many Mexicans make a clear distinction between the two celebrations, viewing Day of the Dead as a sacred family tradition honoring deceased loved ones, while Halloween is seen as a lighter, imported entertainment. Some families celebrate both, creating a multi-day season of remembrance and festivity from October 31 through November 2.
