May 1 in Germany, Tag der Arbeit, is a public holiday with dual significance: a day of labor rights demonstrations and a traditional spring celebration. The labor dimension is marked by rallies organized by trade unions, particularly the DGB federation, with major events in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and other cities. The speeches and marches address wages, working conditions, and social policy.

The Tanz in den Mai tradition on the evening of April 30, similar to Walpurgis Night, kicks off the May Day celebrations. Bonfires are lit, and communities gather for dancing, music, and socializing. In some regions, young men place decorated birch trees, called Maibaum, outside the homes of women they admire, a romantic gesture that has persisted for centuries.

In Bavaria and other southern German states, the raising of the Maibaum or Maypole is a major community event. Villages compete to erect the tallest and most beautifully decorated maypole, and the tradition of stealing neighboring villages' maypoles and negotiating their return with beer adds a playful competitive element. The decorated poles display symbols of local trades and craftsmanship.

May 1 in Berlin has a particularly charged history. The Kreuzberg neighborhood was for decades the site of violent clashes between police and protesters on May Day. In recent years, the Myfest street festival was established to transform the day into a peaceful celebration with music, food stalls, and community activities. While occasional tensions persist, the overall character of Berlin's May Day has shifted toward a more festive atmosphere.
