Mawlid in Turkey, known as Mevlid Kandili, is one of the five holy nights (kandil geceleri) in the Turkish Islamic calendar. The celebration has been shaped by the profound influence of Suleyman Celebi's Mevlid-i Serif, a fifteenth-century poem celebrating the Prophet's birth that is recited in mosques across the country on this night.

Turkish mosques are illuminated with special lights strung between minarets, and mahya messages celebrating the Prophet's birth glow above city skylines. Congregations gather for special prayers and the recitation of the Mevlid, which describes the miraculous events surrounding the Prophet's birth in beautiful Ottoman Turkish verse. The poem's recitation is a deeply emotional experience for many Turks.

The tradition of sharing kandil simidi, ring-shaped bread rolls, is central to the celebration. Neighbors and friends exchange these sesame-covered breads, and bakeries produce special runs of them for the occasion. Lokma, small fried dough balls soaked in syrup, is another Mevlid Kandili tradition, often distributed for free at mosques and community centers.

Turkish Radio and Television broadcasts special programming, and imams deliver sermons about the Prophet's life and character. While the celebration is more restrained than in some countries, it holds deep significance in Turkish Islamic culture, and the night is considered an auspicious time for prayer and reflection.
