Mother's Day(Día de la Madre) en Alemania

Saludo local: Alles Liebe zum Muttertag

Mother's Day in Germany, known as Muttertag, is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The holiday was introduced to Germany in 1923 by the Association of German Flower Shop Owners and gained widespread popularity through the 1930s. While the holiday's association with the Nazi era, which heavily promoted motherhood for ideological purposes, created some postwar ambivalence, Muttertag has since re-established itself as a genuine family celebration.

Flowers are the cornerstone of German Mother's Day celebrations, with the flower industry seeing its highest sales of the year. Bouquets of seasonal flowers, particularly tulips, roses, and lilies, are the most common gift. German bakeries prepare special Mother's Day cakes and tortes, and breakfast in bed prepared by the family is a widespread tradition. Homemade crafts from children, including cards and small artworks, are treasured.

Many German families celebrate with a Kaffee und Kuchen gathering, the traditional afternoon coffee and cake ritual elevated for the occasion. Some families take their mothers for excursions to scenic areas, spa towns, or cultural events. Garden visits are particularly popular, as May is a beautiful time in German gardens with flowering rhododendrons, roses, and spring blooms.

German Mother's Day retains a more modest character than its American counterpart, with less commercial pressure and more emphasis on personal gestures. However, the retail and restaurant industries have increasingly marketed the holiday, and spending has grown steadily. In some regions, particularly in rural areas, the tradition of Maibaum celebrations and spring folk festivals coincides with Mother's Day, creating a festive seasonal atmosphere.
