The traditional New Year's meal centres on nyama choma (roasted meat, typically goat or beef), ugali (maize flour staple), sukuma wiki (collard greens), and pilau (spiced rice). Families gather at homesteads, and it is common for urban Kenyans to travel upcountry to celebrate with extended family, making the last days of December a peak travel period for matatu (minibus) and bus companies.

Coastal Kenya, particularly Mombasa and Diani Beach, attracts both domestic and international tourists for New Year's celebrations. Beach parties, dhow dinner cruises, and fireworks over the Indian Ocean create a festive atmosphere along the coast.
