Saludo local: Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!
Nieuwjaarsdag in the Netherlands is preceded by one of Europe's most intense firework displays. The Dutch spend more per capita on consumer fireworks than almost any other nation, and the stroke of midnight transforms streets across the country into smoky, sparkling spectacles. The tradition is so explosive that several municipalities have introduced firework-free zones in recent years.
Oliebollen, deep-fried doughnut balls dusted with powdered sugar, are the quintessential Dutch New Year's treat. Oliebollenkramen (street stalls) appear in cities and towns from mid-December, and queues on New Year's Eve can stretch around the block. Appelflappen (apple fritters) and berliner bollen (jam-filled doughnuts) are popular alternatives.
On January 1st, the tradition of nieuwjaarsduik (New Year's dive) sees thousands of brave Nederlanders plunge into the frigid North Sea. The largest event is at Scheveningen beach near The Hague, where over 10,000 participants in orange hats run into the icy waves. Similar dives happen at beaches and lakes throughout the country.
The rest of the day is spent visiting family and friends for nieuwjaarsrecepties (New Year's receptions), where hosts serve koffie met gebak (coffee and cake). Many Dutch families also watch the Nieuwjaarsconcert from Vienna on television, and the atmosphere is one of cosy, convivial recovery.
