Beltane is an ancient Celtic festival marking the beginning of summer, traditionally celebrated on 1 May with the lighting of communal bonfires to purify livestock and encourage fertility of the land. Cattle were driven between two fires before being taken to summer pastures, and people leapt over the flames for good luck. A modern Beltane Fire Festival was revived on Calton Hill in Edinburgh in 1988 and now draws thousands of spectators each year.
