Christmas(Noël) en Chili

Salutation locale: Feliz Navidad!

Chilean Christmas, or Navidad, combines strong Catholic roots with summertime celebrations and unique local customs. The holiday season begins with the Novena del Nino Dios, nine days of prayer leading up to Christmas. Villages and neighborhoods set up pesebres (nativity scenes), and some communities stage living nativity reenactments.

The main celebration is on Christmas Eve, Nochebuena. Families gather for a late supper featuring pan de Pascua (a dense fruitcake with nuts, ginger, and candied fruit), cola de mono (a traditional drink made with aguardiente, coffee, milk, sugar, and cinnamon), and a roast turkey or chicken. Ensalada a la chilena (tomato and onion salad) and various cold dishes suit the warm summer weather.

At midnight, gifts are opened, often said to be delivered by Viejo Pascuero (Old Man Christmas), the Chilean version of Santa Claus. Fireworks illuminate the sky in cities across the country, with Valparaiso hosting one of South America's most spectacular New Year's shows, though Christmas fireworks are equally enthusiastic.

In many Chilean families, the Christmas tree is a mix of artificial trees decorated with imported ornaments and local crafts. The next day, Christmas Day, is spent at the beach, in the countryside, or visiting family, often with leftover pan de Pascua and cola de mono for afternoon once.
