Easter, or Pasqua, is the most important religious celebration in Italy, surpassing even Christmas in spiritual significance. The Pope leads the Via Crucis procession at the Colosseum on Good Friday, broadcast to millions worldwide, and delivers his Urbi et Orbi blessing from St. Peter's Basilica on Easter Sunday.

The Italian Easter table is lavish and regionally varied. Colomba di Pasqua, a dove-shaped sweet bread dusted with pearl sugar and almonds, is ubiquitous. In Naples, pastiera napoletana, a ricotta and wheat berry tart perfumed with orange blossom water, is essential. Romans enjoy abbacchio arrosto, roast spring lamb with rosemary and garlic. Enormous decorated chocolate eggs, often containing a surprise gift inside, are exchanged between friends and family.

Florence hosts the spectacular Scoppio del Carro, Explosion of the Cart, a tradition dating to the First Crusade. A towering ornamental cart is pulled by white oxen to the Piazza del Duomo, where a dove-shaped rocket ignites it in a cascade of fireworks. A successful explosion promises a good harvest.

In Sicily, elaborate processions featuring life-sized statues of Christ and the Madonna wind through ancient streets, accompanied by marching bands and hooded penitents. Trapani's Processione dei Misteri lasts twenty continuous hours, making it one of the longest religious processions in Italy.

The most important Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after crucifixion, observed worldwide with sunrise services, egg hunts, and family gatherings.
