Easter(Pâques) en 🇵🇱 Pologne

Easter in Poland, known as Wielkanoc, is arguably the most important holiday in this deeply Catholic country. Preparations begin on Holy Saturday with the Swieconka, the blessing of Easter baskets. Families bring wicker baskets lined with white cloth and filled with symbolic foods to their parish church: eggs for new life, bread for prosperity, salt for purification, horseradish for the bitterness of the Passion, and a small lamb made of sugar or butter.

The Easter breakfast on Sunday is the main celebration, a lavish spread featuring zurek, a sour rye soup with white sausage and hard-boiled eggs, biala kielbasa, baked ham, and an array of salads and cakes. Babka wielkanocna, a tall yeast cake with raisins and icing, and mazurek, a flat shortcrust tart decorated with dried fruits and nuts, are essential desserts.

On Easter Monday, Poland celebrates Smigus-Dyngus, or Wet Monday, an exuberant tradition where people drench each other with water. Originally a rural courtship custom where boys splashed girls they fancied, it has become a nationwide water fight involving buckets, water guns, and water balloons. No one is safe from a soaking.

In the Tatra Mountain region, elaborately painted wooden eggs called pisanki are crafted using wax-resist dyeing techniques passed down through generations. Krakow's Emaus fair on Easter Monday along Salwator Street sells handmade wooden toys and folk crafts.

The most important Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after crucifixion, observed worldwide with sunrise services, egg hunts, and family gatherings.
