Aïd el-Fitr(Eid al-Fitr) en Inde

Salutation locale: Eid Mubarak

Eid al-Fitr in India, called Eid ul-Fitr or Meethi Eid (Sweet Eid), is celebrated by the country's approximately 200 million Muslims with tremendous warmth and communal spirit. The day begins with men gathering for Eid namaz at mosques and open eidgahs, often spilling into adjacent streets. In cities like Lucknow, Delhi, and Hyderabad, the Eid prayers at historic mosques draw vast congregations.

The signature dish of Indian Eid is sheer khurma, a rich vermicelli dessert cooked in milk with dates, pistachios, almonds, and saffron. Biryani, whether the Lucknowi dum or Hyderabadi variety, is the centerpiece of the lunch feast. Seekh kebabs, korma, nihari, haleem, and an array of sweets including gulab jamun, kheer, and firni grace every table.

In Lucknow, the celebration takes on particular grandeur. The Chowk and Aminabad markets bustle with Eid shoppers buying chikan embroidery, ittar perfume, and sewaiyaan. In Hyderabad, the area around Charminar transforms into a massive Eid bazaar selling bangles, clothing, and haleem. Mumbai's Mohammed Ali Road becomes a food lover's paradise during Ramadan and Eid.

Eid in India is notably inclusive. Hindu, Christian, and Sikh neighbors frequently visit Muslim homes to share sweets and greetings, and the phrase Eid Mubarak is universally understood and warmly exchanged across religious lines.
