Le Jour de l'An in France is a day for family gatherings and lavish meals. While the French celebrate New Year's Eve (le Reveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre) with champagne and multi-course dinners, January 1st is reserved for recovering and exchanging New Year's wishes. The French custom of offering voeux (wishes) extends through the entire month of January, with greeting cards sent to friends and family well into late January.

The traditional New Year's Day lunch is an elaborate affair, often featuring foie gras, oysters, smoked salmon, and a galette des rois preview (though the Kings' Cake is technically for Epiphany on January 6th). Champagne remains the drink of choice, and many families open bottles from specific regions they have been saving.

The President of the Republic delivers a televised New Year's address on the evening of December 31st, setting the political tone for the year ahead. On January 1st, many French citizens take promenades through parks and city centres, and some coastal towns in Normandy and Brittany host bains du Nouvel An (New Year's sea dips).

In Alsace, the New Year carries additional customs influenced by Germanic traditions, including special breads and pastries shaped like pretzels or wreaths that symbolize good fortune for the coming year.
