වෙසක්(Vesak) en Thaïlande
Salutation locale: Suk San Wan Visakha Bucha
Vesak in Thailand, known as Visakha Bucha, is one of the most important Buddhist holidays in the kingdom, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. The day falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month, typically in May, and is a national public holiday during which the sale of alcohol is banned.
Thai Buddhists mark the day by visiting temples at dawn to tam bun, make merit, by offering food to monks, releasing captive birds and fish, and listening to sermons about the Buddha's life. The most sacred ceremony is the Wien Thien, a candlelit circumambulation of the temple's main chapel. Devotees carry a candle, three incense sticks, and a lotus flower, walking clockwise around the bot three times in meditation.
Temples throughout Thailand hold special activities including meditation sessions, Dharma talks, and displays depicting scenes from the Buddha's life. In Nakhon Pathom, home to Phra Pathom Chedi, the world's tallest Buddhist stupa, the celebrations are especially grand. In the north, Chiang Mai's temples are adorned with lanterns and flowers.
Many Thais observe the five precepts more strictly on Visakha Bucha, abstaining from killing, stealing, lying, sexual misconduct, and intoxicants. The day is marked by quiet contemplation rather than festive celebration, and the national mood is one of peaceful reflection and spiritual renewal.
