The Significance of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal. It is a day of gratitude, generosity, and community.

Two Weeks Before Eid

Zakat al-Fitr

This obligatory charitable contribution must be given before the Eid prayer. It is traditionally measured as approximately 2.5 to 3 kilograms of staple food per family member. Many communities now accept monetary equivalents through local mosques.

New Clothes and Decorations

Wearing new clothes on Eid morning is a beloved sunnah. Shop early to avoid the last-minute rush. For decorations, crescent moon garlands, "Eid Mubarak" banners, and fairy lights in green and gold create a festive atmosphere.

One Week Before: Menu Planning

Eid morning begins with dates and milk before the prayer. The main feast follows. - **Turkey and the Middle East**: Baklava, lamb kebabs, stuffed grape leaves, and fattoush - **South Asia**: Sheer khurma, biryani, seekh kebabs, and haleem - **Southeast Asia**: Rendang, ketupat, and lemang - **North Africa**: Couscous with lamb, pastilla, and ma'amoul cookies

Eidi and Gifts

Prepare cash in decorative envelopes for children. For adults, boxed dates, chocolates, perfume, or a beautiful Quran make thoughtful gifts.

The Night Before

Follow your local Islamic authority's moon sighting announcement. Lay out new clothes, set the breakfast table, pack eidi envelopes, and confirm the prayer time and location.

Eid Morning

Wake before dawn. Perform ghusl. Apply perfume. Eat an odd number of dates before leaving for prayer. Recite the takbir on the way. Use a different route home — a sunnah that symbolises spreading joy. After the prayer, greet everyone with "Eid Mubarak" and embrace warmly. Return home to the feast. Open your doors to neighbours, friends, and anyone who may be celebrating alone. Generosity is the defining spirit of Eid — sharing food, company, and joy with as many people as possible reflects the lessons of the Ramadan month just completed.

Making Eid Special for Children

Wake them to excitement — balloons and gifts at the foot of the bed. Let them help set the table and distribute eidi to younger siblings and visiting children. Organise simple games or craft activities between meals to keep the festive energy alive throughout the day. Create a family tradition unique to your household: a special dessert that only appears on Eid, a group photograph in new clothes, or a gratitude circle where each person shares something they are thankful for. These small rituals give children something to anticipate year after year and make Eid a cherished memory for the whole family.
