स्थानीय अभिवादन: Christos Anesti
Greek Orthodox Easter, or Pascha, is the supreme religious and cultural event in Greece, often falling on a different date than Western Easter. The week-long buildup culminates in the Anastasi, the midnight Resurrection service on Holy Saturday. At the stroke of midnight, the priest emerges from behind the iconostasis bearing the Holy Light and proclaims Christos Anesti, Christ is Risen. Congregants light candles from this flame, and fireworks and firecrackers erupt across every village, town, and island.
The Easter feast that follows is centered on whole lamb or goat roasted on a spit, kokoretsi made from organ meats wrapped in intestines and grilled over coals, and magiritsa, a traditional soup of lamb offal and lettuce eaten to break the Lenten fast. Tsoureki, a sweet braided bread flavored with mahlab and mastic, is served alongside red-dyed eggs that are cracked in competitive games of tsougrisma.
The island of Corfu has its own dramatic tradition where residents hurl clay pots from balconies on Holy Saturday morning, shattering them on the streets below to symbolize the casting out of the old. On Chios, the rival churches of Vrontados stage a mock rocket war, firing thousands of homemade rockets at each other's bell towers.
Holy Week processions are deeply moving throughout Greece. On Good Friday, the Epitaphios, a flower-bedecked funeral bier representing Christ's body, is carried through every parish, accompanied by dirges and candlelight.
