Mawlid al-Nabi in Nigeria, known as Maulud or Mawlud, is a significant celebration for the country's large Muslim population and is observed as a national public holiday. The celebration is most vibrant in northern Nigeria but is observed by Muslim communities throughout the country.

In the northern cities of Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Maiduguri, Mawlid celebrations are elaborate affairs. Mosques and homes are decorated with green lights and flags. Islamic scholars deliver lectures about the Prophet's life and character, and gatherings feature the recitation of devotional poetry and songs in Hausa, Arabic, and Fulfulde.

The Emir's Mawlid celebrations in Kano and other traditional states are particularly grand. The Emir hosts gatherings at the palace where scholars recite the Quran and deliver lectures. The tradition of Ziyara, visiting religious scholars and elders to receive blessings, is an important part of the celebration in Sufi-influenced Nigerian Islam.

Food plays a central role. Families prepare special meals of tuwo, various soups, and grilled meats. Sweet foods, including kunun aya (tiger nut milk), fura da nono, and various confections, are distributed to neighbors and visitors. Children receive new clothes and gifts. The celebration reinforces community bonds and provides an opportunity for religious education and reflection on the Prophet's example.

Islamic observance of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (570 CE) in Mecca, celebrated with recitations of his life (mawlid poetry), processions, communal meals, and charitable acts across the Muslim world.
