Vesak in Japan, known as Hanamatsuri or the Flower Festival, celebrates the birth of the Buddha on April 8th according to the Japanese calendar, rather than the full moon of the sixth lunar month observed in other Buddhist countries. This is because Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar in the Meiji era and fixed the date accordingly.

The central ritual of Hanamatsuri is the Kanbutsu-e, the ceremony of bathing the baby Buddha. A small flower-decorated pavilion called a hanamido (flower hall) is set up in temple grounds, housing a small statue of the infant Buddha with one hand pointing up and one pointing down. Visitors ladle amacha, sweet hydrangea tea, over the statue, commemorating the legend that celestial beings bathed the newborn Buddha with fragrant rain.

Temples hold special services, children's processions, and cultural events. In some areas, a white paper-mache elephant is paraded through the streets, recalling the dream of Queen Maya before the Buddha's birth. The atmosphere is festive rather than solemn, with cherry blossoms often still in bloom.

Despite Japan's low rate of active Buddhist practice, Hanamatsuri remains a recognized cultural event. Schools and kindergartens may hold small celebrations, and the sweet hydrangea tea is distributed freely at temples. The festival is smaller in scale than in Southeast Asian countries but retains a gentle charm that reflects Japanese Buddhist aesthetics.
