On Vesak Day, Buddhists across Asia release paper lanterns into rivers and the night sky as a symbolic act of letting go of suffering and dedicating merit to all beings. The lanterns represent the light of the Buddha's teachings spreading through the world. In Sri Lanka, towering illuminated pandals depicting scenes from the Buddha's life are erected along roadsides, while in Thailand floating krathong baskets carry offerings downstream.
