Christmas Day(Christmas) in Belgium

Local Greeting: Vrolijk Kerstfeest! / Joyeux Noel !

Belgium celebrates Christmas across its three linguistic communities, each adding its own flavor. In Flanders, Sinterklaas on December 6 is the main children's holiday, while in Wallonia, Pere Noel brings gifts on Christmas Eve. Despite these differences, Christmas Day itself unites the country around the table.

The Christmas Eve Reveillon dinner in Wallonia mirrors French tradition with foie gras, oysters, and a Buche de Noel. In Flanders, families gather on Christmas Day for a roast meal, often featuring wild game like pheasant or venison, or a traditional stuffed turkey. Belgian pralines and artisan chocolates are essential gifts and after-dinner treats.

Belgium's Christmas markets are among Europe's finest. The Brussels Winter Wonders market transforms the Grand Place with a massive tree and light show, while Bruges and Liege host atmospheric markets along medieval streets. Stalls sell jenever (Belgian gin), waffles, and handmade lace ornaments.

Speculoos, the spiced shortcrust biscuit, is everywhere during the season, as are cougnou or cougnole, a brioche bread shaped like the baby Jesus. Many Belgian families also uphold the tradition of attending Midnight Mass, particularly in the more Catholic southern region.
