The Philippines holds the record for the world's longest Christmas season, which begins in September when the 'ber months' start. By September 1, malls play Jose Mari Chan's Christmas in Our Hearts, and the entire country shifts into holiday mode. This extended season reflects the deep Catholic faith and festive spirit of the Filipino people.

Simbang Gabi, a series of nine dawn masses starting December 16, is one of the most important traditions. Filipinos wake before sunrise to attend mass, after which they enjoy puto bumbong (purple rice cakes steamed in bamboo tubes) and bibingka (rice cake cooked in clay pots lined with banana leaves) sold outside churches. Completing all nine masses is believed to grant a special wish.

Noche Buena, the midnight feast on Christmas Eve, is the highlight. After the last Simbang Gabi, families return home for a spread of lechon (whole roasted pig), pancit (noodles for long life), lumpia (spring rolls), queso de bola (ball of Edam cheese), jamon (Christmas ham), and fruit salad made with condensed milk. The parol, a star-shaped lantern made from bamboo and paper, is the iconic Filipino Christmas decoration, and the Giant Lantern Festival in San Fernando, Pampanga, features enormous rotating lanterns that draw thousands.

Filipino Christmas is also deeply communal. Caroling groups called pastores go door to door, companies host lavish parties, and the spirit of gift-giving extends to godchildren, neighbors, and service workers through the tradition of aguinaldo (cash gifts).
