Diwali in India is the grandest and most widely celebrated festival in the country, a five-day extravaganza that illuminates every corner of the nation. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. The festival commemorates Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana.

Preparations begin weeks in advance with deep cleaning and decorating homes. Rangoli, intricate patterns made from colored powders, flower petals, and rice, adorn doorsteps. On Diwali night, millions of diyas, small clay oil lamps, and candles are lit on rooftops, windowsills, and temples, creating a breathtaking sea of light visible from space. Fireworks and firecrackers fill the sky with thunderous displays.

The food is magnificent. Families prepare dozens of varieties of mithai, Indian sweets, including kaju katli, gulab jamun, rasgulla, barfi, and ladoo. Savory snacks like chakli, namak pare, and mathri accompany the sweets. In North India, festive meals feature rich dishes like paneer makhani and dal makhani, while South Indian families prepare special payasam and murukku.

Diwali is also the festival of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Families perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening, and it is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver, or new items for the home. The stock market opens for a special muhurat trading session, and businesses begin new account books. Shopping reaches its annual peak, and markets bustle with gift buyers.
