Japan does not have an official Labour Day holiday, but May 1 is recognized by labor unions, and many workers receive the day off as part of Golden Week, Japan's cluster of holidays from late April to early May. The Japanese Trade Union Confederation, known as Rengo, organizes May Day rallies in major cities, with the largest gathering typically held at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

Golden Week, which includes Showa Day on April 29, Constitution Memorial Day on May 3, Greenery Day on May 4, and Children's Day on May 5, effectively absorbs May 1 into an extended holiday period. Many companies close for the entire week, and workers use the time for travel, family visits, and rest. This practical arrangement means that the labor rights message of May Day is often overshadowed by vacation plans.

Japanese labor culture has unique characteristics that give May Day demonstrations particular significance. Issues such as overwork, karoshi or death from overwork, unpaid overtime, and work-life balance are frequently addressed at rallies. The contrast between Japan's reputation for extreme work ethic and the ideals of workers' rights makes these demonstrations especially poignant.

Despite the absence of an official holiday, Japanese companies increasingly recognize the importance of workers' well-being. Some companies use the Golden Week period to encourage employees to take their full allotment of paid leave, addressing the well-documented reluctance of Japanese workers to use vacation days. The informal observance of Labour Day within Golden Week reflects Japan's ongoing negotiation between traditional work culture and modern labor values.
