New Year's Day in Nigeria is a public holiday marked by church services, family gatherings, and exuberant celebrations. Nigeria's large Christian population attends crossover night services on New Year's Eve, with churches holding all-night vigils (often called Watch Night services) that culminate in prayers, singing, and thanksgiving at midnight.

On January 1st, families dress in their finest clothes, often wearing aso ebi (matching family fabrics) or new outfits purchased specifically for the occasion. A festive meal is central, typically featuring jollof rice (the pride of Nigerian cuisine), fried rice, pepper soup, assorted meats, and chin chin (fried sweet dough snacks).

In Lagos, the Lekki and Victoria Island areas come alive with beach parties and outdoor concerts. Abuja's Millennium Park and other public spaces host events. Many Nigerians travel to their home villages for the holidays, combining the Christmas-New Year period into an extended homecoming season.

Gift-giving to children and elders, charitable donations, and visiting neighbours are important customs. The phrase 'Happy New Year' is repeated enthusiastically to virtually everyone encountered, and it remains an acceptable greeting well into the second week of January.
