<holidayfyi-glossary slug="maypole"></holidayfyi-glossary>A tall wooden pole decorated with ribbons, flowers, and greenery around which people dance in a winding pattern during May Day and Midsummer celebrations in Northern and Central Europe. The maypole is an ancient fertility symbol associated with the arrival of spring. Sweden's midsommarstång is a prominent example, but maypoles also feature in English, German, and Scandinavian May celebrations.
