Christmas(Hari Natal) di Yunani

Ucapan Lokal: Kala Christougenna!

Greek Christmas is a celebration where Orthodox Christian tradition, maritime culture, and Mediterranean warmth converge. Rather than Christmas trees, the traditional Greek decoration was a wooden boat, reflecting the country's seafaring heritage. While trees have become popular in recent decades, many homes and public squares still display decorated boats alongside them.

On Christmas Eve, children go door to door singing kalanda, traditional carols accompanied by a small metal triangle. They are rewarded with coins and sweets. The kalanda tradition is deeply ingrained and continues to thrive even in modern Athens and Thessaloniki.

The Christmas table features christopsomo (Christ's bread), a round loaf decorated with a cross and various symbols representing the family's profession. Roast pork or lamb is the main dish, accompanied by melomakarona (honey-dipped cookies with walnuts) and kourabiedes (butter cookies coated in powdered sugar). These two sweets are so associated with Christmas that bakeries begin producing them in early December.

The Greek Christmas period extends through January 6, Epiphany, when the Great Blessing of the Waters takes place. A priest throws a cross into the sea, and young men dive in to retrieve it, believing the retriever will have good luck for the year. During the twelve days of Christmas, mischievous goblins called kallikantzaroi are said to emerge from underground to cause trouble.
