Christmas in Peru, or Navidad, is deeply Catholic and community-centered, reflecting the country's Spanish colonial heritage blended with indigenous Andean traditions. The season is marked by elaborate nativity scenes called nacimientos, which families set up in their homes with great care, often featuring Andean landscapes, llamas, and traditional Peruvian clothing on the figures.

Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) is the principal celebration. Families gather for a late supper that typically includes pavo (turkey) or pollo (chicken), tamales, applesauce, pan dulce, and hot chocolate. In Lima and coastal cities, chocolate caliente and paneton (the Peruvian version of panettone, often served with hot chocolate) are essential. At midnight, families toast with champagne and set off fireworks.

In the Andes, Christmas incorporates indigenous traditions. Communities stage elaborate dances and processions featuring colorful costumes, masks, and music that blend Catholic and pre-Columbian elements. In Cusco, the Santuranticuy market on December 24 sells handcrafted nativity figures, ornaments, and traditional crafts, and is one of the most famous Christmas markets in South America.

Peruvian children receive gifts from Papa Noel at midnight on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is typically a quieter family day spent visiting relatives and enjoying leftover paneton. The celebration continues through January 6, Bajada de Reyes, when the nativity scenes are finally taken down.
