端午节 (Duānwǔ Jié)(Festival Perahu Naga) di Taiwan

Ucapan Lokal: Duanwu jie kuaile

Taiwan celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival, known locally as Duanwu Jie, as a major public holiday with distinctive local traditions. The island's subtropical climate and strong cultural connection to traditional Chinese festivals make Duanwu a particularly vibrant celebration. Dragon boat races are held across the island, with the most prestigious events taking place on the Keelung River in Taipei and the Love River in Kaohsiung.

Taiwanese zongzi have developed their own distinctive styles that differ from mainland varieties. The southern Taiwanese style features glutinous rice stir-fried with soy sauce and oil, filled with pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, dried shrimp, peanuts, and salted egg yolk, wrapped in bamboo leaves and boiled. Northern Taiwanese zongzi are steamed rather than boiled, with a different texture. Hakka communities make their own style called jiu zong, using alkaline water that gives the rice a distinctive amber color and jelly-like texture.

A uniquely Taiwanese Dragon Boat Festival tradition is the egg-standing competition at noon on the festival day. The belief that an egg can be balanced on its end at exactly noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month draws participants of all ages to town squares, parks, and school playgrounds. Successfully standing an egg is said to bring a full year of good luck.

Protective customs remain widely practiced in Taiwan. Fragrant sachets called xiang bao are sold at temples and night markets, and children wear them as charms against evil spirits and disease. Many families hang bundles of mugwort and calamus on their doorways. Some communities maintain the tradition of the noon water ritual, collecting water at noon on the festival day, which is believed to have special purifying properties. The festival also prompts family reunions and communal meals that strengthen social bonds.
